Now serving thousands of meals a day to young foodies, the new Arnold Dining Commons at Southern Methodist University is a leap forward from the college dorm cafeterias of yesterday.

Monday, the new Fireside Café in Pierpont Commons opened its doors after a six-month, $5.3 million renovation.

The UMass Building Authority said it has completed a $19 million renovation of Lincoln Campus Center, a dining hall at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The facility will house a 1,000-seat dining hall, several restaurants and Food Connection, a new partnership funded by Aramark to study local food systems.

The South Quadrangle dining hall now features 10 micro-restaurants.

The new union will include retail operations, a c-store and faculty club.

A recipe for a whole new cafeteria experience is being served up in San Francisco public schools, consisting of a pinch of progress, a dash of technology and a sprinkle of student input.

When Joshua Karimi, sophomore in secondary education, signed up to live in the K-State residence halls, he got more than he anticipated. He and around 599 other students were set up in overflow housing. According to Karimi, he got the better end of the deal.

For the Loyola University Chicago Retreat and Ecology Campus in Woodstock, an additional kitchen means more educational opportunities, an increased capacity to prepare its campus-grown produce and fewer trips to the grocery store throughout the year.
