3 ways operators are encouraging families to fill out school meal applications

A panel of school nutrition professionals shared their best practices for encouraging families to fill out the forms during the School Nutrition Association’s School Nutrition Industry Conference.

SNIC attendees met in Orlando earlier this week to discuss how they could tackle today’s challenges in K-12 foodservice and plan for the future.

A new selection of sushi will be available to the foodservice provider’s partners in K-12, higher education, healthcare and corporate dining.

Also in this week’s K-12 legislative update: Washington state introduces another universal free meals bill and Kentucky school nutrition workers could see a pay raise thanks to the governor’s state budget proposal.

The nutrition team aims to incorporate nutrition education throughout students' school day.

Over 1 million additional school lunches and breakfast were served each month this past fall compared to the same timeframe in 2022, according to state data.

Since starting the program in 2016, the team has introduced students to a wide variety of local ingredients and has given them the chance to learn more about farmers who produce them.

The organization also advocated for no additional restrictions to the USDA’s school nutrition standards and to raise federal meal reimbursements.

Also in this week’s legislative update: A bill introduced in New York aims to help schools as they continue to deal with a milk carton shortage.
