Proposed bill could help modernize outdated school cafeterias

Many school cafeterias struggle to prepare fresh, healthy meals because of outdated kitchens, but the School Food Modernization Act could bring those outdated facilities up to date.

The foodservice giant has pledged to make its meals healthier by revising its menus and adding healthier choices through a five-year initiative, Healthy For Life 20 by 20.

Columbia Public Schools’ foodservice is making small menu changes this year in an attempt to reduce waste, sell more and give students more of what they want while meeting the federal requirements.

During the Minnesota School Nutrition Association’s annual state conference this week, nutrition professionals tested new foods and attended educational sessions to strengthen their menus.

The Alabaster City Schools’ board of education was treated to a buffet filled with items students will enjoy eating this school year, including the Warrior super salad and fish tacos.

High school students in Tulare, Calif., will return to a new menu, including a teriyaki beef bowl, which was added due to the popularity of an orange chicken dish.

Eighth-grader Elly Kirk has started a petition—which now has 28,000 signatures—for her school to offer more vegetarian lunch options.

Children at Busy Little Beavers Childcare are learning to make trail mix and smoothies under the direction of Memie Christie, nutrition education adviser with Penn State Extension, who offers nutrition programs to schools, daycares and summer camps.

Binkle’s resignation comes in the wake of charges stemming from an investigation into the district meal program’s operational procedures and finances.
