Aug. 6—A group of University of Maryland, College Park students are looking to transform what started as an extracurricular activity to a national nonprofit.
A $15,000 prize from a Consumer Banking Association youth entrepreneurship competition will help the Food Recovery Network expand to six more colleges in the next year. The Food Recovery Network distributes leftover food from the dining halls to food banks.
Food Recovery Network began as a student group in September 2011, after its founders — Simon among them — carried out the organization’s food collecting mission as a project that was part of another student group. Last year, Food Recovery Network collected 30,000 meals for hungry individuals and families in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas.
