Extracurricular activities held hostage for unpaid lunch bills

Students with outstanding lunch bills of more than $50 will not be allowed to participate in after-school activities.

Jan. 31—The Switzerland Of Ohio Local School District, in Woodsfield, Ohio, will penalize students with outstanding lunch bills of more than $50 by temporarily revoking children's privilege to participate in extracurricular activities.

District officials notified students and parents on Monday.

Administrators will give families and students two weeks to get their lunch accounts paid up before the penalty takes effect. Elliott said that field trips are part of the curriculum, and don't count as extracurricular activities.
