In the past year, organizations have taken another look at their policies around employee bereavement. Companies such as Bank of America, Airbnb, SurveyMonkey and Mastercard have extended their bereavement policies, per news site Quartz. These organizations are part of a growing movement inspired in part by Sheryl Sandberg, the same person who asked corporate women to “Lean In.”
Sandberg released her second book, “Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resistance and Finding Joy,” this spring—about two years after her husband’s unexpected death. The author and Facebook chief operating officer has been challenging employers to change the way they help and manage grieving employees beyond leave. After all, it’s in times of crisis that staff need the most support, says Lynn Cody, marketing coordinator for dining services at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
