In December, Philadelphia passed a law prohibiting hiring managers from asking applicants about prior income, and Pittsburgh followed in January. The cities join Massachusetts, which adopted a ban in August, and New York state, New York City and New Orleans, which have barred the practice for local government jobs. The goal of the legislation is to halt the cycle of wage disparity between men and women.
Foodservice’s gender wage gap is lower than many other industries, such as healthcare and finance, according to a 2016 study from Glassdoor Economic Research. However, the report also shows that gender plays a much bigger factor when it comes to certain roles in the industry. For instance, the wage gap between female chefs and their male counterparts is 28.1%, second only to computer programmers.
