1. Real-life consequences
To prevent unpredictable schedules, the nutrition team at Lee’s Summit R-7 School District in Lee’s Summit, Mo., created an incentive connected to real value for employees. Staff members in the department can receive paid time off for absences. However, if they don't let their managers know they won't be coming in before 7:15 a.m. (one hour before their shift begins), they are docked pay.
In addition, employees rack up three points for every unapproved day off, with one free pass. Once they’ve earned four points, the department intervenes with disciplinary action. At 10 points, team members could be terminated.
