How Western Placer Unified is helping students strengthen their connection with food

Chef demos, farmer visits and more have become commonplace at the district this school year thanks to Director of Food Service Christina Lawson, who focused on growing the district's farm-to-school efforts as part of her capstone for the Chef Ann Foundation’s Healthy School Food Pathway Fellowship program.

"Micro farm" to bring fresh greens to Nazareth University

The farm is installed in the dining hall so students can watch their food grow.

As part of this year’s celebration, the foodservice provider is offering a special ‘Dine and Delight’ menu which features students’ favorite dishes.

The nationwide competition is being organized by Sodexo, SFSU’s foodservice provider.

The research projects will allow the grocery delivery company to further analyze the impact food as medicine programs have on various population groups.

Size matters when it comes to listing calorie counts, as customers may be more likely to choose a menu item when nutrition info is printed in a larger typeface.

Also in this week’s K-12 legislative update: States continue to take steps toward implementing universal free school meals for all.

According to the study, only 44% of parents perceived school lunches to be healthy, however, a majority said that school meals can save them money, time and stress.

The foodservice provider has partnered with the National Dairy Council to launch the concept at over 55 schools this month.

Students could try a variety of alcohol-free mixed drinks that contained immune-boosting ingredients.
