Va. senators recommend streamlining child-nutrition programs

Nearly three weeks past the deadline for reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have recommended that the child-nutrition programs be streamlined, reports Newsplex.com.

In their letter to members of Congress Friday, the Virginia senators suggested the consolidation of programs that feed students outside of school hours, as well as the elimination of red tape.

With 17 percent of Virginia children qualifying for the Summer Food Program, the senators are also asking for flexibility for summer meal providers, says Newsplex.com.

"Under current law, schools can provide summer meals through the National School Lunch Program. However, there are different guidelines, eligibility requirements, and applications for non-school organizations based on whether they are providing an afternoon meal during the school year or a meal during the summertime when school is out. This creates inefficiency and an administrative burden that ultimately deters organizations from serving meals year round," wrote the senators.

Recently, New York Governor Bill de Blasio sent a letter to Congress as well, urging them to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act, calling school lunch programs some of the most important tools for ensuring a long, healthy life.
