Va. district creates student nutrition-advisory councils

Richmond Public Schools is taking an unusual approach to the vexing problem of getting students to eat what’s better for them: Let them make the choices.

The district is creating student nutrition-advisory councils to give students more input on what healthful items should be available to them, reports richmondmagazine.com.

Marsha Taylor, dietitian at the district, told the website the council is inviting students to become “red hat ambassadors,” or liaisons between the district, the foodservice staff and the student body.

“That means taste-testing products and other input opportunities,” Taylor told the website. “We expect to find lots of student volunteers, particularly those interested in culinary school or nutrition. They will carry this valuable experience into their future.”
