In an effort to reduce student lunch debt, Staunton City Schools will create a “hard times fund” to help students pay for school meals, reports newsleader.com.
Officials say the decision came after receiving nearly $6,000 in donations from community members, one of which who donated the bulk of the money and requested that a fund be set up to eliminate accrued lunch debt.
The district will use the remaining balance of the donations to kick-start the fund, which asks students to submit a written request for meals they cannot afford.
