The University of Wisconsin at Madison has issued a proposal that would make its dining halls food stamp accessible, The Daily Cardinal reports.
The proposal is being led by Director of University Housing Jeff Novak and Associate Dining Director Julie Luke. If the plan is approved by the state government, UW-Madison’s dining halls could become food stamp accessible starting this fall. The university says it would be the first school in the country to accept food stamps in its dining halls; others, such as Oregon State University, accept food stamps in retail markets on campus.
Implementing the food stamp policy would be easier for UW than many other universities since it runs on an a la carte meal plan, The Daily Cardinal notes. Schools with all-you-can-eat plans would face major hurdles in accepting food stamps since only certain types of items are able to be purchased with them.
