USDA announces results of Summer Food Service contest

Oct. 5—The USDA has announced the results of its first Summer Food Service Program Food, Fun and Sun! Story and Photo contest. The contest was designed to highlight how the program provides free, healthy meals to children in low-income areas during the summer. The USDA received more than 100 contest submissions.

The contest was divided into four categories: Volunteers (using volunteers to support child nutrition program’s work), Older Children (addressing hunger among older kids, aged 12-18), Rural (successful programs in rural areas) and Creative (programs that think outside the box serving kids and teens). The winners are:

Volunteer: Youth and Family Services in Rapid City, S.D.

Older Children: Boys and Girls Club of Ada County in Boise, Idaho

Rural: Running Strong in Eagle Buttle, S.D.

Creative: Kinsley Library in Kansas

“We must do all we can to ensure that children get nutritious food during the summer so they are ready to learn and succeed during the school year. The organizations that participated in the contest demonstrate the commitment that people in many communities have made to reach this goal,” Kevin Concannon, USDA undersecretary for Food Nutrition and Consumer Services, said in a press release. “All organizations participating highlighted the critical role of the Summer Food Service Program in ending childhood hunger by providing our children the nutrition needed to be healhty, active and ready to win the future.”
