After failing to pass the 2018 farm bill in May, the House on Thursday approved a version of the bill with provisions that could impact the number of students receiving free school meals, CNBC reports.
The $867 billion farm bill, which narrowly passed the House with a 213-211 vote, would cut more than $20 billion in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits over the course of 10 years and would increase the work requirements for program enrollment. Critics of the bill say that it could cause almost 265,000 children to lose access to free school meals.
The bill will now go into conference with the Senate version of the bill, which does not include major changes to SNAP.
