University foodservice workers, students protest Sodexo

The fight for a higher minimum wage continued Tuesday at Binghamton University in New York as the school’s foodservice staff protested with students for a fair contract, reports wbng.com.

The workers—who are employed by the university’s foodservice vendor Sodexo—expressed their concerns about the vendor’s labor practices, citing unfair treatment and that some of them make an average of $12,000 per year, without affordable benefits.

Sodexo has a 10-year, $350 million contract with the university. Bargaining sessions have been scheduled for later this month between the vendor and the United Public Service Employees Union, the union that represents its workers, university officials said in a statement.

“[Sodexo] workers have every right to seek the best contract they can obtain and members of our community have every right to express their solidarity,” said Brian Rose, VP of student affairs at BU. “Results will be achieved at the beginning table between the two parties engaged in the actual bargaining process.”
