MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—The Rutherford County School District is now the only system in Tennessee with 100 percent compostable lunchroom materials, according to school officials.
During a spotlight on food service at Thursday’s regularly scheduled board meeting, Fred Blair, director of school nutrition, discussed the yearlong process of moving toward more environmentally safe products in county schools.
“We started this process last January,” Blair said. “Every one of the schools in Rutherford County moved away from using Styrofoam and toward all plastic-free and all-compostable materials.”
