Sophia Finster, a senior at the University of Iowa, has started a petition urging UI President Bruce Herrald to extend campus sustainability goals beyond the current mark of 2020.
Finster would like the campus to “weave sustainability” into its core and implement a plan of action, plant a garden and craft new course requirements that would take the university through 2050, reports The Gazette.
“As a businessman, you understand the importance of looking beyond the next few years to mitigate the documented risk that climate change and the challenges of sustainability present. For long-term success as a university, we must weave sustainability into our core,” Finster wrote in the petition, which now has 45 signatures.
UI Spokeswoman Jeneane Beck told The Gazette on Monday that President Harreld has agreed to meet and discuss options that would help the university reach its goals for 2020 and start working on the goals for 2050 as well.
