Senator calls for protection of child nutrition standards

A landmark 2010 act that made major reforms to federal school lunch programs expires later this year, and Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand (D-NY) is calling on Congress to protect the legislation’s enhanced child nutrition standards.

Gillibrand will visit Buffalo Promise Neighborhood Children’s Academy on Bailey Avenue at 3 p.m. Monday to push for more fresh fruits and vegetables in schools as part of a call to renew the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.

The legislation authorizes funding and sets policy for USDA’s core child nutrition programs: the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), the Summer Food Service Program, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
