Senate cafeteria-worker protests continue

Senate cafeteria-worker protests for a higher minimum wage and the right to unionize continued Tuesday as dozens of foodservice staff staged a sit-in at Senator Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) office, reports ourfuture.org.

The staff gave Cruz—who is on the committee that oversees foodservice staff contracts—a “golden Grinch” award. They also wore Santa hats and chanted “no justice, no peace.”

Last month, thirty-three U.S. senators sent an open letter to the CEO of Compass Group, which oversees Restaurant Associates—the foodservice vendor that operates the Senate cafeteria—asking that cafeteria employees be allowed to vote on unionization, FoodService Director reported.

Restaurant Associates CEO Dick Cattani replied to the senators, stating the company respects all of its employees and their right to unionize. It also stated that RA and its executives “do not believe there has been any attempt to intimidate workers in the Senate Dining Room.”
