Seattle parents protest length of school lunch

Twenty-minute periods don’t give kids time to buy and eat lunch, complaints allege.

SEATTLE — Some Seattle parents say their grade school kids are being rushed through lunch and not given enough to time for recess.

On Wednesday they brought their concerns to the Seattle School Board.

The issue first surfaced at Whittier Elementary School, where some parents started tracking how long their children got for lunch period.

At least one parent took pictures of the lunchroom and said her child is often in a rush to eat.

The district policy allows for 20 minutes for lunch but some parents say the kids are forced to cram food in their mouths, and are sent out to recess to make room for other students in the lunchroom.
