Auer Avenue School in Milwaukee will be implementing hot breakfast twice a week for students after successfully piloting a version of the program, Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service reports.
The idea for hot breakfast stemmed from an article students wrote two years ago for the school newsletter about how they would like healthier meals at school. In the fall of 2016, stakeholders from Milwaukee Public Schools, the Armani Neighborhood Association, the school’s parents’ club and others partnered to fund and implement a pilot program that would serve hot breakfast to students each Monday. The program ran for eight weeks and concluded earlier this month.
Auer Avenue brought in local chef Michael Feker to teach volunteers how to prepare and serve the meals, which include items such as a burrito plate. Previously, students only had cereal and other cold packaged food options for breakfast.
The school will expand the program to Mondays and Fridays after students return from spring break.
