School district proposes $1.8M cafeteria renovation

A nearly $5 million bond proposition in the Depew school district highlights a limited area election slate Tuesday.

Two other elections are being held in Creek County. Voters in the town of Mounds and the city of Oilton will decide whether to grant a 25-year utility franchise to Oklahoma Gas and Electric.

An estimated $1.8 million of the bond in Depew would go toward the construction of a domed cafeteria. The 7,700-square-foot facility would double as a safe room that could withstand an EF5 tornado, said Leon Hiett, the district’s superintendent.

It would seat 312 people and boast a standing capacity of 1,000, making it large enough to accommodate the entire school district (enrollment 388) and town (population around 500), Hiett said.
