SAN ANTONIO — The summer break from school means no homework, no tests and, for thousands of children, no healthy meals to eat.
It’s also the busiest time of year for the San Antonio Food Bank, which is gearing up for the extra demand.
“It’s when kids who were getting free or reduced-price food at school are home for the summer without that resource,” said Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank.
The Food Bank serves 16 counties where one in every four children is considered food insecure.
“We’re going to be packing a lot of meals for kids,” Cooper said. “We’ll do well over 300,000 meals over the 11 weeks of summer.”
The nonprofit could use donations of money, food such as peanut butter, and volunteers’ time.
