Queens school aims for sugar-free

Using agave and honey to sweeten dishes instead.

May 3—A Queens school has banned bake sales and swapped out chocolate milk for water in an effort to make the school healthier.

The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria is working with a nutritionist to eventually make the all-girls, public middle and high school completely sugar-free. Many of the school’s roughly 500 students have also pledged to eat better.

The school has been creating no- or low-sugar breakfasts and lunches for students, using agave and honey to sweeten dishes, she said. It also boasts a salad bar stocked with hummus and zucchini and corn salad and offers home-made dressings.
