Private Calif. school’s cafeteria earns sustainability designation

International nonprofit organization the Green Restaurant Association has named Muse School’s cafeteria a green-certified establishment, earning more points than any other restaurant certified by the GRA to date.

“I applaud Muse’s leadership in providing a successful foodservice operation that is in concert with the oft-used word ‘sustainability,’” GRA’s CEO and founder Michael Oshman said in a statement.

The Calabasas, Calif.-based private school earned the designation—as well as the title of currently being the greenest restaurant in the world—by implementing 49 of the association’s environmental steps to become a 4-star certified green restaurant, according to a release. In order to become certified under the GreenPoints program, operators must complete requirements and earn sufficient points in the areas of water, food, waste, disposables, energy, furnishing and building, as well as chemicals and pollution.

Key changes at the school included switching to a plant-based menu—which was implemented over an 18-month period—while educating students about its environmental benefits, according to a release. Solar panels also were installed on the school grounds, which provide 100 percent of the facility’s electrical needs.
