Pa. district's foodservice works to overcome $72,000 loss

Cites participation decline in light of new school meal pattern.

April 11—Typically a solid money-maker, the Great Valley School District Food Service Program, in Malvern, Pa., is playing catch-up following the implementation of the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. Through February, the program had a loss of $72,000.

“I anticipate it to turn around by the end of the year to hit the break-even point,” Food Service Supervisor Nicole Shaw said. “However, at the beginning of the year, our participation decreased significantly, associated with the act.”

Shaw said the school meal changes led to decreased student purchases. This year’s meal total is down about 12,000 over 2011-12, and a la carte sales are down by $10,000.
