Pa. budget woes impacting students’ bellies

Some college students in Pennsylvania are grumbling in more ways than one due to the state’s six-month budget impasse, reports pennlive.com.

Students have been waiting to receive state grants awarded to them in federal financial aid through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency to pay for such things as food—including what some students would use to pay for a campus meal plan—rent and books.

A budget was expected to pass by Thanksgiving, but didn’t due to “a sales tax increase that would subsidize property tax cuts,” according to the website.

Student groups—including the Shippensburg University student senate—are organizing free dinners and meals to alleviate some of the pressure, and colleges across the state have credited accounts and approved extensions in an effort to help those eligible for the grants as well.
