Ohio summer foodservice program includes weekends

Gov. used executive order to direct $1 million in unspent federal funds for weekend meals.

June 29—Last month, Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed an executive order directing $1 million in unspent federal funds to be used to buy weekend meals for needy children.

On June 22, Kasich stopped by a Columbus-area park to watch as the bagged meals were distributed to youngsters who might otherwise go hungry on Saturday and Sunday. The program is an extension of summer food service programs that provide hot meals to needy youth when schools are not in session.

The kid-friendly packets include ready-to-eat entrees—two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and two boxes of milk—packaged in a way that will allow recipients to prepare them for themselves, without adult supervision, if necessary.
