More than 130 New York school districts are looking local, as they've committed to participating in a U.S. Department of Agriculture pilot program that gives them funds to purchase local produce for school meals, reports The Daily News.
School officials say the program not only expands access to local food, but allows districts to buy directly from vendors, providing them with the flexibility to order food when they need it.
“It’s a great program with a lot of great items,” Laurie Locke, a lunch manager at Le Roy Central School District in Le Roy, N.Y., told the Daily News. “It gives us an advantage and it is saving us money. It goes above and beyond what we’re allotted through our entitlement program.”
