N.Y. district partners with food bank for new program

Mount Vernon School District has teamed up with the Food Bank for Westchester to ensure no student goes hungry after school, The Mount Vernon Daily Voice reports.

School officials say the BackPack Program provides at-risk students with food that’s easy to prepare on school vacations and weekends.

Each BackPack comes with six meals—each including a protein, milk, fruit, grains and vegetables—and recipes for families in the event the meals are shared.

“We make sure our students get the nutritious lunches they need while they’re at school. This program enables us to make sure the neediest children are fed after they leave our care,” MVSD Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton told the Voice.
