N.Y. aims to end ‘lunch shaming’

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is launching a program to end lunch shaming in the state.

The No Student Goes Hungry Program would forbid districts from demeaning students who cannot afford to pay for their meal, and requires that they be given the same lunch as other students regardless of whether they can pay.

Additionally, the proposal would require schools to offer breakfast after the first bell of the day if over 70% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. The state says it will offer technical assistance and an estimated $7 million in capital funds for equipment to help expand breakfast programs in 1,400 schools across the state.

Also included in the proposal is a plan to expand access to farm-fresh foods and a requirement that state university system campuses set up food pantries for students.

New York is the latest state to address lunch shaming. California and New Mexico passed laws banning the practice last year.
