SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Students at Jeffries Elementary School got a taste of some locally grown foods on Tuesday. In addition to the school lunch menu, kids got to try a mix of fruits and vegetables, all of which were harvested here in the Ozarks.
The "Farm to School" program is part of a $42,000 grant by the U.S.D.A and aims to bring regionally-produced food into school cafeterias and to teach children about what they eat and where it comes from.
Springfield Public Schools have divided the funding into two parts-- education and tasting.
On Tuesday, lunchtime at Jeffries Elementary featured something on the menu-- a cucumber-tomato salad.
Five-year-olds Arianna Warren, Layla Redden, and Micah Davis all tried and liked the salad.
"I liked every single thing," said Davis.
All the ingredients in the salad are locally grown by Fassnight Farms.
