Middle school students develop food allergen detector

Detector uses rama spectroscopy to determine if food contains allergens.

May 28—Two students at Kilmer Middle School, in Vienna, Va., may have found a solution to the guesswork some customers may have to engage in regarding food allergens in their meals.

The students have developed an allergy food detector. The prototype is the size of a cell phone, and you use it less than two centimeters away from food to tell if te item contains one of 50 allergens. It works by using something called rama spectroscopy, explained eighth grader Joyce Tian.
