Michigan school's participation increases after USDA free meals pilot

District unsure of program's future.

May 16—Dearborn Heights District 7, in Michigan, is participating in a new federal Community Eligibility program that allows schools that meet certain conditions to offer free lunch to all students.

Only a handful of states offered the program, said Jeff Edwards, District 7’s food service director with Sodexo. While the Community Eligibility program is popular with families, it has cost District 7 more than it expected and the cash-strapped district is considering whether to continue it next year.
