Mesa schools aim for healthy, restaurant-style meals

New items include Rachael Ray's Mexi Mac and Cheese.

When school starts in August, some items on Mesa (Ariz.) Public Schools cafeteria trays will look more like healthful fine restaurant fare than fast food.

The district's 84 schools will still serve student favorites like pizza, burgers and corn dogs, but the pizza will be made with low-fat cheese, the beef patties will be smaller and the corn dogs will be made with whole-grain cornmeal.

New items will be served, including television chef Rachael Ray's Mexi Mac and Cheese. It calls for whole-grain pasta, low-fat cheese, corn and fresh cilantro. The school district made it even more healthful by adding fresh tomatoes.
