Maryland state government wants to increase funding for breakfast program

Maryland Meals for Achievement is a program provides free meals for classrooms at participating schools.

Feb. 18—In his fiscal 2014 budget, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley requested $1.8 million to increase funding for a state-funded breakfast program.

Maryland Meals for Achievement is a program that began in 1998 and provides free meals for classrooms at participating schools. All students at eligible schools eat for free, regardless of family income.

In order for a school to qualify for the program, it must participate in the federal school breakfast program and 40 percent of its enrollment must be eligible for federally subsidized free or reduced-price meals.
