Maryland governor pushes for more finding for school breakfast program

$1.8 million could help expand program to 130 more needy schools, O'Malley says

Jan. 21—Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has recommended that $1.8 million to be added to the state’s budget for Maryland Meals For Achievement, which provides free breakfast for all students in their classrooms in schools that qualify.

With the extra funding the program, which provides breakfasts to 33,000 students at 271 schools could be expanded to serve 56,896 more children in about 130 more needy schools, bringing the total spent to $5.18 million for 89,896 students in 407 schools.

Students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor will be served student-grown produce from the campus farm at dining halls this fall, M Live reports.

The dining team received its first batch of produce from UM’s on-campus farm in June, after students received the proper USDA certification to grow, harvest and deliver food to campus dining halls.
