Idaho schools should see more local produce on menus

The state’s department of agriculture is using $18,000 in grant funding to conduct four events designed to increase the amount of local food being served at schools.

BOISE, Idaho — Four conferences for farmers and food-service personnel will be conducted around the state next year in an effort to increase the amount of local food being consumed in Idaho schools.

The events will be supported by an $18,000 farm to school grant the Idaho State Department of Agriculture received from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service.

“It will allow us to continue to work with our farm to school partners to provide information to producers and to schools that will lead to more healthy, local foods being served to Idaho’s school children,” ISDA Director Celia Gould said in a news release.

This is the first year the FNS has awarded these Farm to School Conference and Events grants, which were awarded specifically to help states conduct educational events for food-service personnel and farmers.

Three regional workshops will be held around the state next summer to help food-service personnel incorporate more local food in their menus.
