Hospital cafeteria revamps provides healthy items

Calif. childen's hospital turns cafeteria water damage into healthy menu makeover.

March 29—When water damage necessitated a renovation of the cafeteria environment at Palo Alto, Calif.'s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital cafeteria it also provided the opportunity to improve the health of the location's menu options.

The cafeteria reopened on Jan. 17 with menu items that meet the hospital's food and beverage policy, which take into account nutritional concenrns such as fat, sugar and salt content and portion sizes. It also calls for whole-grain breads and pasta, low-fat dairy and meat products, vegetarian options and a variety of seasonal and locally grown fruits and vegetables.
