High school’s on-campus garden yields food for school meals

East Peoria Community High School is growing and harvesting organic vegetables in an on-campus garden, reports The Journal Star.

According to school officials, the fruits and vegetables—including broccoli, kale, pumpkins, tomatoes, summer squash and watermelon—are grown by students in a science class and are incorporated into school meals.

Penny Stewart, the cafeteria manager at EPCHS, told The Star that some of the most popular items with students are grape tomatoes and watermelon.

“They liked the fact they were grown at school and we used these items,” she said.
