Hawaii elementary school seeks to reinstate on-site kitchen

Officials and students at Keaukaha Elementary School in Hilo, Hawaii, are asking lawmakers to fund the installation of a full-service on-site kitchen, reports the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

Students told the Tribune-Herald that the quality of meals suffered when meal preparation was moved off-site several years ago. Last summer, the school debuted a new cafeteria, which has a kitchen but lacks cooking and prep equipment, officials say.

The near $500,000 project would allow the school to cook and prepare food on-premise as opposed to trucking it in daily, says the website, adding that those pushing for the new kitchen are also seeking additional funds for four full-time staff members.
