Grab-and-go breakfast doubles high school’s participation

With addition of choices like breakfast bars, 525 students are now having breakfast in one form or another at Mass. vocational school.

CHARLTON, Mass. — A new grab-and-go breakfast option at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School has more than doubled the number of students starting the day with a healthy morning meal.

"A lot of kids said they don't have time or they can't eat first thing in the morning," Food Service Director Kathleen Alicea-Tilton told the school committee Monday.

A first-year goal, the new director said, was to increase student interest in a morning meal by offering healthy choices in quick and easy way.

The grab-and-go options, which include breakfast bars, milk and fruit juice, augment the traditional hot meal offered at school each day.

The new program has increased the number of students buying breakfast to 525 per day, compared to the 245 per day reported in October, Ms. Alicea-Tilton said.
