Fundraisers may suffer as schools move toward healthier food

Vending machine snacks, cafeteria baked goods and candy and food sold at fundraisers must change or be eliminated under new USDA rules.

MUKILTEO, Wash.—Schools across the country are trying to figure how to handle new USDA requirements on snacks sold on school grounds during school hours.

While the intent is good -- reducing obesity rates in students by having them eat more nutritious snacks --  fundraisers may be the ones that will be short changed.

Snacks sold in vending machines, along with candy and baked goods sold in cafeterias or for fundraisers, must change or be eliminated under the rules that take effect on July 1.
