Fourth grade students take initiative on food waste

Students are driving force behind leftover food donation program.

April 9—When two fourth graders at Jaime Escalante Elementary School in Cudahy, Calif. saw how much food was being wasted every day from the cafeteria they decided to do something about it.

The students, Lesley Heredia and Paulina Sanchez, worked with the school to first create a "common table," where unopened food is placed where students can go for second helpings. When the students saw that there was still leftover food, the students approached the district to create a program for the food to be donated.
