Fla. hospital’s garden educates patients, students about nutrition

Baptist Health South Florida’s Homestead Hospital is not only educating patients about nutrition with its Grow2Heal community garden, but students as well.

The 10-acre garden, which is located on the hospital’s campus, features all organic and locally grown herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables, according to the Miami New Times.

The garden’s harvest is put to multiple uses: Produce is served in the cafeteria, flowers are placed in patients’ rooms and K-12 students participate in educational activities—including soil prep and weeding—as part of the hospital’s “Grow your Lunch” program, officials say.

"To further the experience, students harvest and learn how to make a delicious, fresh, non-processed and nutritious lunch that they eat on-site, which helps foster a greater connection to their environment," Thi Squire, the garden's project manager, told the Times.
