District tests pricier organic lunches

Glen Rock School District in Glen Rock, N.J., is piloting a program that will enable students to purchase an organic meal once a week, North Jersey reports.

The organic meals will be offered every Thursday until the end of March. If 50 or more of the meals are purchased each week during the test run, the option will become a permanent addition to the Thursday menu.

Glen Rock and its vendor, Pomptonian Food Services, introduced the idea of offering organic lunches after garnering parent input. The organic meals cost $6 (standard lunches are priced at $3.75 and $4.25), and include pasta and meatballs, grilled cheese, nachos, cheeseburgers and vegetarian options.

Pomptonian reported that 130 organic lunches were sold during the first week of the trial earlier this month.
