District starts donor program to help students pay for lunch

Austin Public Schools in Austin, Minn., has started a donor program to help students whose families are struggling to pay for lunch, the Austin Daily Herald reports.

Named the Lunch Tray Project, the program was created by the district’s head of food and nutrition services and matches donors with families that don’t qualify for free or reduced-price meals, but are still having trouble financially.

Officials say it costs $450 to provide one student with lunch for the whole school year.
