District nutrition services director honored for local-seafood initiative

Jennifer Gerard, director of nutrition services at Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, is the recipient of the 2015 California Food for California Kids Innovation Award, according to The Monterey County Weekly.

The Center for Ecoliteracy—which promotes ecological education—honored Gerard with the award for her Bay2Tray local seafood-sourcing program.

Gerard told The Weekly that more students are appreciating “fresh food.”

"It's even visible in how they react in the line—they're respecting staff and thanking them more,” she said. “I'm not sure if they recognize the fact they're behaving differently. And I don't know if it's because they feel more respected or if better food simply demands a certain level of respect.”
