District foodservice workers take tips from professional chef

Hoover City Schools plans to add some spice to its lunch menu after participating in a local chef demonstration, reports the Shelby County Recorder.

During a recent training session, nutrition professionals in the Birmingham, Ala., district met with chef and registered dietitian Garrett Berdan and taste-tasted three Asian-inspired dishes. To develop healthy meals that kids will enjoy, Berdan suggested using ingredients that are tasty yet nutritious, including low-sodium soy sauce.

Attendees, who were given five recipes, say Berdan’s tips can be incorporated into their menus quickly.
